It’s already May 2011 and summer is upon us. So get your cinema passes ready because we’re about to hit the summer festivals of blockbusters from Hollywood and beyond. I’m only saying this because I just caught the first summer blockbuster movie over the weekend: THOR. I first blogged about it because of Asano Tadanobu’s appearance as Hogun in it, though he only said 3 – 4 lines tops in the movie.
The epic adventure ‘Thor’ spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the mystical realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. As a result, Thor is banished to Earth, where he is forced to live among humans. When the most dangerous villain of his world sends its darkest forces to invade Earth, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero.

Thor: the God of Thunder
My verdict is this Marvel Studio comic turned film has definitely lived up to the hype, entertaining and though not as fun as ‘Iron Man’, it’s got amazing graphics, storyline, and brilliant actors (hot Chris Hemsworth as Thor, stunning Natalie Portman as Jane, old Anthony Hopkins and Odin Alfather, lovely Tom Hiddleston as Loki, sexy Kat Dennings as Darcy and funny Stellan Skarsgard as Erik Selvig). It also helps that the brilliant Kenneth Branagh was the brains behind the lens, so there were substance and humour in the film too. I’m now even more psyched to watch ‘The Avengers’ with all the Marvel Comic heroes under one roof now that the plans for the movie are slowly unveiled with these amazing characters. Though ‘Thor’ is not officially out till May 6 worldwide, I guess we got an early release in light of the long weekend break.
So let’s see what other summer blockbusters will be out soon.
1. Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides (May 2oth)

Captain Jack Sparrow is back!
The next summer blockbuster is none other than our favourite Captain Jack Sparrow’s misadventures in Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides. Though this is Johnny Depp’s 4th time as Captain Jack, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.
2. The Hangover: Part II (May 26th)

The wolfpack is back.... in Thailand
The wolfpack is back and this time they headed off to Thailand. Enough said.
Phil, Alan and Doug travel to Thailand for Stu’s wedding, but after their little escapade in Las Vegas, Stu has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things do not go as planned after they lose the younger brother of Stu’s fiancée.
It’s gonna be a riot!
3. X-men: First Class (June 3rd)

X men: First Class
X-men fans unite! Set in 1962, this is the prequel movie to the X-Men trilogy as we know it starring the amazing James McAvoy and upcoming Michael Fassbender.
X-MEN FIRST CLASS charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.
Guhhhh this is gonna be a great movie.
4. Green Lantern (June 17th)

It's Green Lantern baby
The Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds is a DC comic character who wears green and saves the world.
In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.
Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris, if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.
5. Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon (July 1st)

Transformer 3: Dark of the Moon
With a new chick in tow, Transformers is back with its third and final installment of the series by Michael Bay.
The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and learn its secrets, which could turn the tide in the Transformers’ final battle.
Go Autobots!
6. Captain America: the First Avenger (July 22nd)

Captain America: the First Avenger
In 1942, Steve Rogers is deemed physically unfit to enlist in the U.S. Army and fight the Nazisin World War II. Volunteering instead for Project: Rebirth, a secret military operation, he is physically transformed into a super-soldier dubbed Captain America. With sidekick Bucky Barnes, he fights the Red Skull, Hitler’s treacherous head of advanced weaponry, whose own plan for world domination involves a seemingly magical object known as the Tesseract.
Starring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers aka Captain America, he is the first Avenger of the Marvel Comic series, and I’m super excited to watch this on the big screens. Even the poster looks marvelous. Have a look at the trailer:
8. Conan the Barbarian (August 19th)

The remake of Conan the Barbarian
I had a love affair with Conan the Barbarian. It was my childhood action hero movie and I loved every single moment of it. I even named my first puppy Conan. So I’m not sure what to think when a remake was coming up this year starring no name actors. I guess Hollywood really is running out of new stories. In any case, here are the synopsis and trailer.
After his father is murdered and village destroyed, Conan ventures into an unforgiving world where he survives as a thief, pirate, and warrior. On his path of wanton adventure and women, Conan chances upon the warlord responsible for his tribe’s destruction. As he tracks Khalar Zym, Conan battles monsters, Zym’s henchmen, and Marique, a powerful witch.
